Moving house is both fun and exhausting, especially when you consider the packing and unpacking involved.
There are so many things that you could forget to pack or buy, but if you follow the tips outlined below, you will be one step closer to a smoother moving experience.
For the kitchen
Your kitchen will most likely be the heart of your home but it is easy to forget the simple things we often take for granted when packing. Some of the items you should include on your list before you start packing are a can and bottle opener, a wooden spoon, oven mitts and other cooking equipment.
Other items that you should be sure to include are a spatula, measuring cups and paper towels for those times when you have to wipe up spills on your counters. Measuring spoons and a kitchen scale are important to pack for those who will be doing a lot of baking and cooking on their Smeg stove.
For the living room
The living room is where you will be spending a good amount of time, so you will need to be certain it is furnished correctly. Other than having couches, side tables and lamps, you should add to your list coasters, a magazine rack, a TV cabinet with drawers for DVDs and a throw or two for cold nights.
It is easy to forget the small things when moving, so be sure that you have packed all of the television remotes, screws for the wall art you may be hanging up and the decorative items you may want to place. These items may not seem essential but they can go a long way to making this new space feel like home.
For the bathroom
Your bathroom is often the last room of the house you look to, both when packing and unpacking. The essential items you should bring with you to your new home include a shower curtain with extra rings in case one breaks, a shower caddy, a soap holder, toilet paper, a toilet brush and a toilet plunger.
Other items you should include in your list to make life a little easier should be toothbrushes and toothpaste, bath mats, air freshener and a trash can. If you pack your bathroom essentials early on in the move, you will save yourself from having to scramble around looking for them or buying new items because you did not stock up on something before the move.
For the bedroom
The bedroom is where you will be spending a large chunk of time in your new house, so you should be sure that you have every necessary item to make it as comfortable as possible. Pack items such as a full-length mirror, suitable lamps, a laundry hamper and plenty of hangers.
You should also invest in different bed coverings for the different seasons, such as down duvets for winter and comforters for spring. Inject some fun into the room by placing brightly coloured and patterned cushions on your bed, and include some wall art or decorative accessories.
For the laundry room
If you are lucky enough to have a laundry room, then the necessities you need to bring with you include laundry detergent, bleach, dryer sheets if needed and an ironing board. If you do not have these before moving in, it could prove to be a hassle to find them at short notice.
You will most likely have the large appliances already for your laundry room, but if you do not have much space for both a washing machine and a tumble dryer, you should look into a washer dryer. It is a machine that combines the functionality of both appliances into a sspace-saving single option. You will be able to wash and dry your clothes without having to find space to fit two bulky machines.
Remember to have fun
Packing for a move to a new home should be a fun and exciting experience. It can seem daunting at first, but if you involve everyone in the process and approach it with an organised mindset, you will have a smooth and easy time of it. Remember to keep an inventory of everything you are packing, and which box the items are in. This will help the removal company and your insurance. A detailed list will also help you to find items without having to search through piles of boxes.
