Tips on looking after furniture

Furniture fills up a huge section of our house and it should be looked after in order to prolong its lifespan. You might place the coaster on your coffee table but people neglect to use it. Coffee mug rings, dirt and dust can leave marks on the furniture. And can permanently damage it. Children spend hours using the furniture as their jungle gym. They leave marks, mud and dirt on the sofa. Pets also tend to have an impact on the furniture, because they jump and scratch on it. And if you neglect to regularly look after your furniture you are chipping away at its longevity.

You can lengthen the lifespan of your furniture by choosing carefully where you locate it. If the furniture is easily susceptible to damage then you should not place it where it will be frequently used, like the bedroom or living room.

Different materials need different maintenance. Here are some tips to help you out.:

Wood

Many people are not aware that wood is quite sensitive. Whether it’s bedroom furniture or flooring, wood needs to be looked after. Using abrasive detergents to clean it can cause detrimental effects. Cleaning wooden furniture is pretty simple, here are a few guidelines on how to take care of wood:

Use water and a soft cloth to wipe away any dirt and dust. If there are white marks left from glasses with water, then you can take olive oil and vinegar and a soft cloth to wipe off the rings. Petroleum jelly is also effective. Apply it on the stain, let it settle overnight and then wipe it away in the morning.

Avoid placing wood where it’s in direct sunlight. This will cause the colour to fade.

Instead of using sprays or polish to maintain your furniture, rather use wax. Take a cloth and add the wax and rub it on the wood.

Leather

Many people are wary of having leather in their homes because they feel that it’s high maintenance. But the truth is leather isn’t that hard to take care of.

You can use a dry cloth to wipe it regularly. If you spill something on leather it should be wiped off immediately with a dry cloth.

Vacuum all parts of the leather, ensuring that you remove cushions, and you also vacuum the crevices in the couch.

You can purchase leather conditioner at a furniture shop. Condition your leather lounge suite every six to twelve months.

Avoid using bleach, furniture polish or detergents as they can cause permanent damage.

Avoid placing leather in an area that is likely to get sunlight. Leather and sunlight do not mix very well together. The sun causes the colour to fade. And it also causes cracks on the leather.  The cracks can badly deteriorate the appearance of leather.

Upholstery furniture

Fabric can be hard to maintain as it gets dirty quickly. Upholstery furniture needs frequent dusting and cleaning. If you do not clean it on a regular basis, it might cause the furniture to wear quickly. Spills and stains should be wiped off the material immediately for the best results. Deep cleaning of your furniture should be done every two years in order to keep it in the best condition.

Fabric usually contains code cleaning labels and this gives you the best methods for caring for your furniture.

SW – You can use water or solvents to clean the furniture.

W – If the label contains a ‘W’ then it means that you can clean the furniture with water and upholstery cleaners.

S – It must be cleaned with solvents only. When cleaning don’t use water.

X – The ‘X’ is hardly found on material anymore. It means the furniture should be vacuumed.

These are different kinds of Upholstery:

Velvet – This is a very delicate material that will require you take extra special care of it. If it’s not maintained or cleaned properly, it could lead to being permanently damaged. A soft clean cloth should be used when wiping away dirt from the velvet material. Do not wipe off the dirt roughly. Be gentle when cleaning this type of fabric to prevent wear and tear.

Wool – This is a natural material that is durable. Wool doesn’t wrinkle easily. It’s quick to fade and is hard to maintain.

Acrylic – If you have this material on your furniture, you can place it anywhere in the room because it’s resistant to sunlight, unlike other sensitive materials. It’s also very practical because it’s easier to clean. If it’s used together with other material, like polyester and nylon, it doesn’t fade as quickly.
Manufacturers usually add instructions on how to look after the furniture. If you follow them correctly, this will prolong the longevity of the furniture. Lack of care for it will cause wear and tear. This could cost you in the long run because then you have to replace it with other furniture.
